Edition 19 · Wednesday Midweek Reset

How to Actually Use a Specialty Recruiter.

The relationship that pays dividends for years - when you do it right.

Last Week in Edition 18

We worked the panel. This week, we work the partner you should have had from Edition 01 forward - the specialty recruiter. Not the inbound spam. The real one. The one who remembers your name in two years when the right role opens.

Most candidates misuse recruiters. They treat them like a vending machine - put in a resume, wait for a job to pop out. That is not what a specialty recruiter does.

A good specialty recruiter is a relationship. They know the market you work in. They know the companies that hire you. They know the hiring managers who make the calls. Used right, they are the single highest-leverage network you can have in your career. Used wrong, they are a waste of both your time.

Here is how to actually use one.

The Midweek Check-In

Do you have a specialty recruiter who knows you by name? Someone you could text today, not email. If the answer is "only generalists who ping me on LinkedIn," you are missing the real leverage.

When was the last time you reached out to a recruiter with something other than "any roles for me?" Great recruiter relationships run on reciprocity. If every interaction is you asking for something, you are not building a relationship - you are extracting.

Do you know which recruiters in your space are actually good? Some specialize deeply in your vertical. Some cast wide nets. The former are worth building with. The latter will push you into whatever role pays them, not the one that is right for you.

The Shift That Changes Everything

Think about it as a two-year play, not a two-week one. The best roles come to you because a specialty recruiter remembered you when a perfect fit opened up - not because you applied to the listing. That memory is built over months through relationships, updates, and the occasional referral.

The candidates who land the best roles are usually the ones who invested in recruiter relationships before they needed them.

The Framework: Four Moves to Build the Relationship

01Pick the Right Recruiter

Not every recruiter who messages you is worth a response. A specialty recruiter knows your vertical, has placed 10+ people in similar roles, and can talk to you about the market - not just about open roles. Before you invest time, check their LinkedIn: do they post about your field, who have they placed, how long have they been in it. Two minutes of research saves months of wasted conversations.

02Open the Relationship With Value, Not a Resume

The worst first message is "here is my resume, any roles for me?" The best first message is specific. "I read your post on [topic]. I work in [specific thing they would find interesting]. Would love 15 minutes to trade notes on the market." No ask. No resume. Just interest.

03Stay in Regular, Low-Key Contact

Every 6-8 weeks, send something. Not a "circling back on opportunities" email. A real update: a project you shipped, a trend you are seeing, a piece of news about a company they care about. Keep you top of mind without ever looking hungry.

04Reciprocate When You Can

Did they place someone you know? Send a congrats and connect them with someone relevant. Did they share market intel? Trade something back. Refer a colleague for a role that is not for you. Recruiters remember candidates who helped them build their network, and those are the candidates they prioritize when the right role opens.

Recruiter Red Flags

Not every recruiter is worth investing in. Walk away from any who:

  • Push you into roles that clearly do not fit. They are optimizing for commission, not you.
  • Will not name the company or share the job description upfront. "A major healthcare company" is not enough.
  • Pressure you for fast timelines without a clear reason. Urgency is often a manipulation tactic.
  • Ghost after submitting your resume. Professional recruiters close the loop, win or lose.

Great recruiters communicate clearly, know their market, and treat the relationship like a long game. Invest your time with those ones.

Your Strategy Through Friday

If you have never had a real specialty-recruiter relationship

Open the Recruiter Outreach Message Builder below. Send one message this week to a recruiter you have identified as specializing in your vertical. No ask. Just connection.

If you have a recruiter relationship that has gone cold

Send the "value-first update" message from the builder. Share something useful. Do not ask for anything. The relationship will warm back up without you having to beg for it.

If you are being contacted by recruiters and unsure which to invest in

Open the Recruiter Fit Scorecard below. Rate each one on specialization, communication, and market knowledge. Invest in the ones that score above 35. Politely decline the rest.

The Midweek Mindset

The best roles go to candidates with two things: a clear story, and a specialty recruiter who remembered their name when the right role opened. The first you build yourself. The second you build by showing up, adding value, and playing a two-year game.

Start now. The relationship pays dividends for the rest of your career.
